Students Transform Classrooms into Vibrant Biomes

Apr 10, 2024

For the second consecutive year, the Grade 3 students at TIS have once again embarked on an impressive project: transforming their classrooms into vibrant biomes. This hands-on endeavour engages students in a collaborative and immersive learning experience, fostering curiosity, ownership, and a deep love for learning.

Transforming a classroom into a lifelike representation of a biome requires students to employ a range of skills. Through collaboration with peers and guidance from their teacher, students work together to determine the most effective materials and techniques to recreate the key features of their biomes. For example, in the Cave biome, students have ingeniously utilised the Christmas lighting to simulate the sparkling crystals found deep within the caves. This innovative use of crafts and materials not only adds an element of realism to the project but also encourages students to think critically and creatively when problem-solving.

By turning their classrooms into five distinct biomes - Desert, Ocena, Cave, Tundra and Mangrove - the students have not only embrace their roles as experts in their designated area, taking on the responsibility of researching and understanding their unique characteristics, fauna and flora, but have also delved into a hands-on, collaborative learning experience, fostering their curiosity, ownership and deep love of learning.

The project also aligns naturally with the School’s commitment to sustainability, and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through exploring different biomes, students gain an appreciation for the delicate balance of ecosystems and the importance of preserving biodiversity, and become active participants in shaping a better future for our planet.

One of the most outstanding qualities of this project is the sense of ownership and responsibility it creates in the students. By entrusting them with the task of transforming their own learning environment, they develop a connection to the project and take pride in their work. This hands-on experience sparks their enthusiasm for learning and nurtures their sense of achievement.and their enthusiasm for learning shines through this hands-on experience.
